Federal Realty is the definition of sustainable business: built to last and with a vested interest in the future. Sustainability is not a separate mission, but an embedded component of our long-term vision and core business philosophy.
As a committed leader in sustainable development and management, we consistently apply a sustainability platform to make sound and strategic decisions to minimize and reduce environmental impact by constructing resource-efficient buildings, investing in renewable energy sources, creating places that promote healthy outcomes, and reducing energy and water use throughout our portfolio.
Our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices embrace the values of social economic growth, natural resource protection, and health and wellness through new development and management of existing properties. We believe it is important to continually evaluate the impact of our actions on the community, business operations, and the environment, because all are critical to long-term success.
From new developments like Assembly Row (MA) to redevelopments of existing buildings, we incorporate sustainability best practices in all our projects. We combine a mixed-use, high-density, and transit-oriented approach to placemaking that betters the community and enhances the quality of life for residents, employees, and visitors.
Sustainability in Action
Roof-to-table is taking sustainability to another level. Federal Realty teamed up with Up Top Acres and Bethesda Green for the first conversion of an existing rooftop into a rooftop farm in Bethesda, MD. The vegetables, greens and herbs grown here are being served at José Andrés’ Jaleo restaurant downstairs.View Video
Environmental & Social Benefits
Reducing our environmental impact goes hand in hand with social benefits. From installing rooftop solar systems and LED lights to reduce energy usage and costs—as seen here at Tower Shops (FL)—to advanced meters that reduce water waste, to gifting 1,000 LED light bulbs to Habitat for Humanity, Federal Realty is always looking to enhance our communities.
Health & Wellness
Our communities are designed to bring people together and promote active lifestyles. For example, The Point (CA) features outdoor spaces for socializing and fun activities, surrounded by culture and cuisine, health and wellness facilities, biking and jogging trails, and easy access to mass transit.
